All too often we set goals that we know we’re not going to be able to keep, but we set them anyway, year after year, and we fail almost every time. And typically, these resolutions are ways to improve our lives such as working out more, reading more, eating healthier, and so on. Yet we fail to accomplish them because of what we have to give up in order to succeed. But what if you didn’t like what you have to give up and in return you were guaranteed to improve not just one aspect of your life, but all of it? In case you couldn’t tell, this is a mattress store blog, so the obvious answer to the above riddle is getting better sleep. But before you resolve to get more high-quality sleep It’s important to understand why you need better sleep and how getting will improve your life. Insufficient Sleep Consequences: Irritability Exhaustion Easily distracted Making unsound decisions Weight gain High blood pressure Cancer Heart disease Stroke Diabetes Bone loss Depression What’s Impaired with Insufficient Sleep: Learning Memory Alertness Concentration Judgment Problem solving Reasoning Now that you know the consequences of improper sleep habits, let’s get to the resolutions that can improve your sleep life. Simply repeat the parts in bold out loud and you’re on your way to a year of sleeping great! (assuming you follow through of course. Perhaps speak these words to a friend and demand they hold you accountable. Actually, a spouse might be a better choice unless your friend sleeps over a lot.) 2020 Sleep Resolutions Resolution 1: I resolve to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Resolution 2: I resolve to make it a point to get better quality sleep each night. Resolution 3: I resolve to stop using electronics an hour before bed. Resolution 4: I resolve to update my pillow. Resolution 5: I resolve to upgrade my bed if I haven’t done so in a decade. Resolution 6: I resolve to make my bedroom a sleep sanctuary. Resolution 7: I resolve to wash my sheets once a week…or at least once every two weeks anyway. Resolution 8: I resolve to keep my bed free of pets. Resolution 9: I resolve to go to bed at the same time every night. Resolution 10: I resolve to repeat this list out loud once a week If you’re able to stick with even a few of these, you’re guaranteed to get a great night’s sleep for as long as you do.
