Sleep Is Good For The Heart

A sleep study (first reported by USA Today) was presented at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology, proving just how important sleep really is. In fact, one of the highlights of the study stated that adults getting between six and eight hours of sleep at night are at a lower risk of having a stroke. Keep reading to discover other outcomes of the study, proving how sleep is good for your heart.

Dr. Epameinondas Fountas expressed that, “Sleep influences biological processes like glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and inflammation – all of which have an impact on cardiovascular disease.” A continued lack of sleep causes an increased cardiovascular risk which is similar to smoking or diabetes when you’re older. This is serious business. Another study presented at the meeting claimed that hardened arteries could occur when you experience a lack of sleep, and so increasing your risk for cardiovascular disease.

More research must be conducted to determine the exact reasons why sleep has such a profound effect on the heart. Doctors understand what happens when you don’t sleep, but why the lack of it strongly affects the heart, needs to be determined.

Insufficient sleep has already been linked to relapses in addiction, weight gain, and the development of Alzheimer’s. It is crucial to get a restorative night’s sleep to avoid these potential issues and heart problems.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of Americans do not get enough sleep. You may not realize just how much having the wrong mattress or sleeping on an old mattress can affect the quality of sleep you are (or aren’t) getting. Other factors such as your cell phone, bedroom lighting, or pillows can also play a part in the quality of sleep you get every night.
