Why Do People Talk In Their Sleep?

Have you ever been awoken to late night chatter from your partner sleeping next to you or from your kids in their bedrooms? Have you asked them in the morning what they were talking about and they have absolutely no idea? Chances are they were sleep talking. About 50% of all children between the ages of 3 and 10 talk in their sleep while a smaller percentage of adults do the same; around 5%. While this nightly behavior isn’t a cause for concern, it is rather curious.

Find out why people talk in their sleep…..

Sleep talking is more formally known as somniloquy. It can occur sporadically for some and frequently for others. It is more common for men and children to talk in their sleep than adult women. It usually occurs during a deep sleep, or REM sleep, and is not always tied to dreaming. Sleep talking can involve whispering, calling out, mumbling, or talking. The person who is talking in their sleep doesn’t know what they are saying because they are unaware it is even happening.

Talking in your sleep can occur if you are having a nightmare, sleep apnea, or other sleep disorders. It can also be brought on by fevers, drinking too much alcohol, sleep deprivation, daytime drowsiness, depression, or stress. While most sleep talking is not associated with a mental or medical illness, it can be linked to adults over 25 years old that often sleep talk.

While most sleep talking doesn’t require medical treatment, there are some instances that will require you to see a sleep specialist if you’re an adult. Sleep talking can be an issue if there are other behaviors associated with it such as fear, violent actions, or screaming. If talking in your sleep starts to disturb you or your partner’s sleep, it could be a good idea to see a sleep specialist. There are no tests to diagnose if you talk in your sleep so you’ll have to rely on your partner, parents, or roommates to tell you if you sleep talk. A sleep specialist can recommend a sleep study.
